Exfoliating Serum

Your skin can feel smoother, softer and appear more radiant with the help of an exfoliating serum. An exfoliating serum helps to remove dull, devitalised dead skin cells from the surface of the skin, which results in a more even toned and brighter complexion. The choice is yours, depending on your skin type and specific concerns, with exfoliating serum for the face formulated with enzymes, exfoliating acids or physical exfoliants.

Exfoliating Acid Serum

Without a doubt, the most popular form of exfoliating serum is the exfoliating acid serum. These serums typically contain alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) or beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs) or a combination of both AHAs & BHAs that work synergistically to refine the skin. The way acid based exfoliating serums work is by dissolving the intercellular glue or bonds between dead skin cells, enabling them to be easily removed from the surface of the skin. AHAs are water-soluble and work on the surface of the skin which is ideal for a range of normal and dry skin types, while BHAs are oil-soluble and can penetrate deeper into the pores making these preferable for oily or congested skin types.

Exfoliating Night Serum

Encompassing the exfoliating acid serum is a product known as a night exfoliating serum. This is simply a skin renewing treatment typically formulated with a higher concentration of active ingredients such as AHAs, BHAs, vitamin A or enzymes that go to work smoothing and renewing the skin whilst you are at rest, which is when the skin naturally speeds up its renewal processes. Some ingredients in a night exfoliating serum may be better applied at night to minimise skin sensitivity to sunlight. As a general rule, it is recommended to apply a good quality SPF sunscreen everyday when you are treating the skin with an exfoliating serum day or night.

Best Exfoliating Serum for Face

The best exfoliating serum for face is the one most effective at treating your skin concerns whilst respecting your individual skin type. For instance, an oily or acne-prone skin could respond well to a BHA based exfoliating serum as this type of serum is oil soluble and can help to decongest the skin. Sensitive skin can benefit from the gentle renewing action of an enzyme based exfoliating serum, which is non-abrasive. Whilst normal to dry skin may prefer an AHA or physical exfoliating serum to smooth and reveal a more glowing skin appearance.

Do You Wash Off Exfoliating Serum

Exfoliating serums for the face are generally most effective when left on the skin, unless the directions for use advise otherwise. The exception may be a physical exfoliating serum which may be rolled, rubbed or buffed off the skin prior to rinsing. By leaving enzyme and acid based exfoliating serums on the skin, under your moisturiser application, you are ensuring the active ingredients have the best opportunity to deliver smooth results. Should an exfoliating serum burn, sting or cause severe redness be sure to remove immediately with cool water.
