Unless you’re a makeup artist by trade or a consummate cosmetic enthusiast, chances are you don’t even know what every option in the palette is for. It’s great that you have a complimentary selection of shades, but where does each one actually go?

There are four standard eyeshadow colours that come in a majority of palettes: highlighter shades, accent shades, transition/crease shades and line and contour shades. Sometimes you’ll have one of each, and sometimes you’ll have a variety. 

Here’s how you can tell which is which:

Your highlighters are your lighter colours and are usually used to highlight areas of the eye that are naturally hit by light, like on the ridge just under your eyebrow and in the corner of your eye. Accents serve to play up naturally shadowed areas with pigmented, vibrant colours and are used on the eyelid itself and blended from the lash line all the way to the crease. The transition/crease colours are most often characterised by medium shades and neutral colours. These are meant to be used in the crease of your eyelid. Your line and contour colours are the deeper and darker shades you'll find in your set. These will be swept under your lower lashes and the outer corner of your eye.
